Fiddle Leaf Fig

Between the two of us, Mike and I have four brown thumbs. Seriously, we kill just about every plant we get our hands on.

With the new house and an actual patio, we've decided to give gardening another try and are both pleasantly surprised that the few plants we've bought haven't kicked the bucket yet. I attribute this to the the fact that most of the grassy areas in our complex are way over-watered so any that seeps into the ground surrounding our yard provides enough to keep our plants from dying during the 'dry spells' when Mike and I forget to water.

Along with the few plants we've put in the ground, we also have a lime tree in a container that's really taken off as well as a few other little flowering plants that seemed to die at one point but are now back with a vengeance.

All this luck has pushed me to take the plunge and try my hand at a house plant I've been coveting for a few years now - the fiddle leaf fig. Now that you've seen one, I bet you will notice a million more as they've become the 'it' plant of home decor. I've read from other blogs that a few years ago they were super expensive and virtually impossible to find but now they are more common place at big box stores like Home Depot and Lowe's.

As we do almost every Saturday, we hit up Home Depot this weekend for a few items and ended up coming home with a cute little fiddle leaf fig for $16. Right now it's about three feet high and more of a bush than a tree, but already adds so much color to the living room. These plants can be a little finicky but do well in front of a window with a lot of light and consistent watering. At the very least, I have comfort in knowing that if it dies within a year, Home Depot will gladly take it back... though I'm hoping that won't be necessary.

Modern Retro Living Room

Inspired by my post on black and white stripes the other day, I decided to create a mock living room using polyvore with some of my current favorite pieces. I'm calling this vibe 'modern retro' and think it would look amazing with a few natural accessories to complete the look. I don't know if Mike would go for it... What do you think?

Keeping with my determination to expose myself to more art, I also found this portrait by Stephanie Vovas that would look amazing in this living room. The retro vibe and the lady's green eyeliner would tie it all together perfectly.

Living Room Conundrum

I have a serious crush. On this couch:

The Murphy sofa from Room & Board in Indigo. I spotted this lovely piece over at Oh Joy! when she teamed up with Emily Henderson to decorate Joy Cho's new office. The stock color is also one of my favorites - a rich emerald - but Mike isn't sold on a green couch even though he likes the lines of the Murphy sofa.

Oh Joy
Lately I'm really loving the look of jewel toned furniture, neutral walls, natural elements, and lots of texture. A new couch probably isn't in our cards for this year, but our comfy sectional from the apartment is just not working for either of us in the new space. Our living room is long and skinny which makes it hard to figure out where to put furniture.

This is the set up of our current living room now. The corner triangle is the fireplace which is pretty hard to decorate around considering it sticks out into the middle of the room. The two large rectangles are our couches which just feel massive in this space. Plus, I like sectionals when they can be put into one big comfy area that kinda "zones off" the lounge area but split apart like this, they just look a little funny.

Possible Setup

I'd really like to remove the TV as the center of attention but it is what we use this room for so I don't know if it's completely practical. Mike and I agree on most things when it comes to home decor (or he just lets me do what I want), but the TV is the one place he has put his foot down. Like most guys, he wants an overstuffed sectional to spread out on and have people over to watch 'the game' -- which I totally understand but 1) we don't have any type of cable and only get very limited reception with our rabbit ears and 2) no one puts on a better game-day lounge & feast event better than our good friends (who we affectionately call Double D), so why even try to compete? I suggested making our second bedroom as a sort of 'den' but it didn't really stick.

Until then, I'm focusing my attention on finishing these cabinets and dreaming in jewel tones.
